Oct. 31st-Nov. 2nd (late afternoon) - Chaco Canyon and Bisti andDe Nah Zin Wilderness area in Northern New Mexico
$349.00
Looking for someplace really different in the Southwest? Explore Bisti with Rod and photograph some very remote geological formations in Northwestern New Mexico. This wilderness covers an area of 45,000 acres that includes an area with many petrified trees as well as large areas covered with strangely-shaped stones balancing on tall pinnacles. Many of these formations are only a short walk from the western entrance . You will not find any tourists here. Then we will visit Chaco Canyon. Chaco Culture National Historical Park preserves one of America's most significant and fascinating cultural and historic areas. Chaco Canyon was a major center of ancestral Puebloan culture between AD 850 and 1250. It was a hub of ceremony, trade, and administration for the prehistoric Four Corners area - unlike anything before or since. Chaco is remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings, and its distinctive architecture. We will photograph a sunrise and/or sunset to maximize the warm light on ancestral buildings.

Bosque Del Apache
December 5th(early AM)-December 7th late afternoon - Central New Mexico
$359.00
The name resonates with nature photographers --"Bosque del Apache" (Apache Woods). This wildlife preserve in southern New Mexico is one of the preeminent sites in the USA for photographing migratory birds. During the first week of December you may be able to photograph up to 30,000 Snow Geese, 48000 Ducks, 12,000 Sandhill Cranes, and 22 Bald Eagles who reside in the Refuge. The photography opportunities are remarkable. From almost an hour before sunrise till well after sunset, this is a bird photographer's paradise. Even during mid-day, you can photograph close-ups of the birds as they eat in the northern fields or swim in the ponds in the middle of the reserve. Amidst the breathtaking sight of the huge flock of Snow Geese flying into the pond, and then flying out again, are the Sandhill Cranes. The cranes, with wingspans of six to six and one half feet, have flown 1700 miles from their nesting grounds in western Canada. Tall stately birds with ash gray plumage and a reddish orange forehead, the cranes stalk the marshes, searching for frogs, rodents, insects, bulbs, seeds, and berries. We will leave early Friday morning so we can arrive in Bosque to photograph at sunset. On our return home (if time permits) we will visit Bisti Badlands or other ancient Indian sites. The Bisti Badlands is an amazingly scenic and colorful expanse of undulating mounds and unusual eroded rocks covering 4000 acres in Northwest New Mexico.
